I’m off now, for over a week, and I’m very pleased about it. Initially, I thought I may get bored though I have a ‘list’ of things that need doing so I’m sure I’ll keep myself occupied. Work has been quite a slog, with Christmas and the New Year, and an average of almost 500 orders a day; it’s been exhausting! Customers have been mostly okay, but there’s always one or two, and today I was told to move my trolley. Honestly, a polite request will get you want you want, and we’d all be happy that way. People! Can’t k… LMAO
I’m a tad miffed that I have to use up so much leave now, with very little in the way of a break in March. The manager, in the past, has approached us about leave, and asked when we’d like to take it. He’s off at this time, and the supervisor just told us when we would be off. I know we need to work to the requirements of the business, but I’ve never been told, in all my years of working, when I had to take leave. Hmmm.
This week, we were ‘told off’ about the amount of non-picking time. Apparently, we’re taking too much time if we pop to the loo, and between trolleys there’s often a lag. Well, we speeded up a tad, and that left us having to put bags in our own trolleys because the baggers couldn’t keep up. So that’s even more ‘down’ time. Can’t win… We were also told that there’d be no overtime for a while. Most of us were relieved about that. However, the very next day, at short notice, several us were asked to work over. Most of us, including me, politely declined. Can’t have it both ways; chastise us in one breath and expect us to work overtime in the next. I’m glad I’m off for a while as morale has been a tad low. I’m hoping the manager will be back soon. He’s good at chivvying us along. He’s the one who gave the ‘rallying cry’ a while back. He’s funny.
We had a bonus in our pay this month, for work over the holiday period. It was a percentage of actual hours worked, and whilst it was a nice addition, due to my part time hours, and the fact that we had to take 3 days off when we don’t pick, it wasn’t that much, and fell way short of what I’d read the discount stores had paid their staff. We had the opportunity to fill in an anonymous staff survey, about what it’s like to work for this supermarket, and at the end there was the ability to add your own suggestions/complaints and so on, so I mentioned how I feel we lag behind certain other food outlets. Still, it all helps pay the bills.
So, my time off: I need to replace some lightbulbs though first I need to buy a freaking ladder. I’m so annoyed, because we had a step ladder, and I left it in the shed at the previous house. D’oh! I plan to make half a coffee cake; I like cake though most shop cake leaves a lot to be desired IMO. I plan to open some boxes that we never unpacked; that will free up space under the stairs. I need to see if the paint under the stairs matches the living room; the Deckhand recently scratched the paintwork whilst moving something; honestly, the paint is so thin here that if I wipe the walls the damn paint comes off! The Ship’s Dog needs a good grooming; he’s leaving so much ‘fluff’ around the house I joke that we’ve all been fluffenated. I never got around to cleaning the cooker or fridge, so there’s that. Finally, I hope to catch up on some sleep; not been sleeping at all well lately, and I keep dreaming about work. Give me strength! Lol
Well, that’s enough rambling. I feel tired just reading my plans lol. I’m making chickpea tagine for dinner tonight (vegan) then it’s a full roast chicken dinner for Sunday with cider gravy. Yum!
Take care, be safe out there, and hopefully we won’t have the awful weather that’s been forecast for many of us.

My little bro said recently that he had a six day weekend booked, mostly a pile up of rest-days. Unfortunately, he had to work five of them - due to a mix of idiot co-workers / managers and covid. As he's doing 12 hour shifts, that's a lot of work. Luckily, father's house was "winterised" the last time he was there, so I hope it is still OK, as neither of us can visit.
This household are still "shielding" and having food etc delivered - the local cases have come down a lot, but not far enough for us oldies to want to venture into the shops, especially as the one small "supermarket" can't do much in the way of covid spacing, nor does it enforce masks ! Anywhere else ain't "local" enough to qualify.
Birds are chowing down on the various foodstuffs we've supplied - mealworms, peanuts and various seed mixtures. Some have started house-hunting !
As for leave requests, I've had a few weird experiences with those - planned, forced and otherwise over the years. Had a stand-up shouting match once, when a manager cancelled a booked three day break at less than 12 hours notice (it was from Noon and I was working the morning shift; his manager intervened and I got my break, there was a strained atmosphere for a few weeks after that, then someone else got yelled at. I got another job a couple of months after that exhibition !) .
Really pleased, because today, I got the actual order for a new work project; it was informally agreed we would get a new one sometime during the summer last year but covid slapped a stopper over the necessary moves, and then we had more lockdowns and then many delays in the processing of much paperwork. I could write a novelette on this one ...
The prospect of bad weather is worrying me now, hopefully we don't get too much snow tonight / tomorrow ...
Anyway ... upwards and onwards !
Looking forward to my first jab [I'm guessing that will be about late March / Early April]
in the meantime Keep Safe & remember ...
Hands : Face : Space !
Hope the order goes well.
We've had a little snow already, however it's so damp here that it didn't settle. The white stuff can stay away.
No idea when I'll be offered the vaccine. I'm in my 60's, and have no underlying health conditions, so it could be some time.
The rollout seems to be running at an average of 2.5 million jabs a week at the moment, but by March/April they will be ramping up with second jabs as well, which complicates the predictions !
My OH and the friends who live with us should be late February / Early March. I might scrape early March, if not by late March / early April, all being well.
[My SiL has now had her second jab - she's a radiographer and has a few health issues.]
Still, enjoy the time off. If nothing else you will get a little recharge and caught up on a few things.
As to sleep or the lack thereof, I sometimes feel like (and look a LOT like) a zombie! Not a very pretty one at that!
My sister, in Wales, has serious health conditions and I'm really shocked that she hasn't been offered the vaccine yet. Hopefully soon.
Gracie - I can only assume she did it to make the scheduling easier for her and whilst the time off is appreciated, I would have liked less time now, and some more time off in March. Still, it is what it is and I shall enjoy the break from the supermarket, and the early start, especially with the less than favourable weather we are having.
I thought when I had to retire to look after Margaret I would be rushing about like a mad thing but so hit my stride and if it wasn't for the fact that Margarets cancer was terminal I could quite enjoy being a house husband,That all changed when I was farther down the road after her death. I found long periods with nothing to do which bored me silly and I longed for my old job lying under mucky farm machinery kicking them back to life.
As time went on and I met up with a few old pals and hiking with them. I found a never had time to think of working
If you enjoy most of the time at work and you are up to it health-wise carry on doing it Fran, time can drag for me now when the weather keeps me cabined up and all of my old pals have gone
Speaking of fields, I didn't know you worked on farm machinery. That must have been interesting, if mucky, work.
Hopefully spring will be here soon enough and the weather will be better for getting out and about to exercise. Today, we have a very hard frost and I'll have to defrost my car to get it to the garage for a service.
