Well, we’ve had some extreme weather here and no mistake. Recently, we’ve had 2 weather warnings, I did some shopping to be safe, and it came to nothing. This time, I did just a little top up shop, and we’re now snowed in. I have bread in the freezer but running low on milk and I don’t have any eggs or fresh meat. Oh well, I’ll manage and there’s quite a bit of food in the freezer and there’s always pasta. As I’m typing, the power has dipped, twice. OMG.
I was having a long weekend off from visiting Mum as my kid sister was going to cover it. Nobody is going anywhere with this snow and road closures, and I just hope there are enough staff able to get to the hospital, or who are already there as my Mum can’t cope without assistance; I’m sure many patients are in the same situation; it’s a worry.
Thursday, late afternoon, I got out the snow shovel and moved the snow away from the front and back doors, and the steps and path leading up to the road. This morning you wouldn’t know I’d done it and the snow was so high, I couldn’t open the back door which opens outwards. The front door opens inwards, so I cautiously opened that and cleared the snow, then walked to the back door and did the same. At least the dog can now get out to do his business in the garden. It’s unlikely I will walk him today. He had 2 walks yesterday when it wasn’t too bad though now we have drifting snow and it’s very deep in places. It won’t hurt him to miss a day, or maybe two. Last thing I need is to fall in this snow and be injured, or even the dog to be hurt as there’s no way I could get out to a GP or a vet. We’re holed up for a few days I reckon.
Thursday I was having a little nap when my middle sister got in touch. Our brother has surfaced and doesn’t believe we’ve been trying to contact him. I told her, I’d phoned him, twice, and no response and the rest of the family have phoned and written. She was in a foul mood and ended up shouting at me. She rang again, twice, to apologise, and fed up of biting my tongue, I told her a few home truths and that I was sick of the drama from certain parts of our family and that I was moving away and glad to be doing so. I’m not usually mean, but honestly, there are 4 of us, and you wouldn’t believe we were raised by the same parents. My kid sister is like me, and we get on well. My middle sister is loud, aggressive, and confrontational and my brother? He’s a Walter Mitty type and doesn’t keep in touch and is very ambivalent about the rest of the family. Who needs the drama?
Keep safe out there in the snow, keep warm and dry and hopefully it won’t last too long. Thanks to Gracie – she knows what for…

As for being snowed in I have had that a long time ago, the snow was up to the upstairs window sills except for the fron of the house, but when I opened the front door snow fell inwards anyway and you don't suck it up with a vacuum cleaner unless you have a death wish.
They say you can choose your friends but family are yours no matter what !
I've lived in this house for 20 years, he hasn't ever visited here. Although our paths cross quite often at Dad's place in North Wales.
I've had something like 12" of fine, powdery snow and the wind yesterday and currently is drifting some large heaps in strange places. Of course some of the local roads are blocked. At least one, the direct route to the village, has a large BMW abandoned across it at the steepest point. So if anyone needs an ambulance ...
Also have some very artistic icicles hanging off the house.
Been feeding the birds every few hours, there are loads of them, and the falling snow was filling the trays for the ground feeders. The sensible ones are resting against the house, under some climbers. There are some "fights" but nothing too rough, most seem to regard our feeders as "common ground" or they wait for the more bossy ones to fly away before scoffing their fill.
Sorry for the length of that - I am thinking of you.
Best wishes
S
Wow John that's deep snow! If it was ever that bad here it would be disastrous for many I'm sure.
S - We have drifts about a foot deep in the street, and my garden, mainly due to the winds we had. I think we've had about 6 inches, tho it's hard to tell because of the wind blowing it around. As I went to bed, I looked out, and the snow was horizontal, caught in the wind. Hoping it won't last long.
Little more snow here though we've had a little thaw too. Temperatures are set to rise, so hopefully all will be back to normal for me to visit Mum on Monday. We've had a gritter down our road which was a pleasant surprise, though still 2-foot deep drifts in places. At least I can get out the doors this morning even if I can't get the car off the drive.
I have no family to wear me down. Only a son in Plymouth and a daughter in Turkey. If I had a sister and brother who caused me that amount of grief, I don't think I'd have been so kind as you've been. Home truths would have been issued way before you did. You're an angel.
As for surviving on frozen stuff whilst this weather is around - did you know you can freeze milk? I've always got a couple of litres in the freezer, for dire emergencies as well as some other milk in cartons - but they'd only be used for cooking with.
In the end, I think we had a good 6 inches of snow though high winds made this worse by causing drifts that in my garden, were over 2 feet deep. We've been cut off since Thursday morning. It's now Sunday, and raining a little which should help the snow to melt as long as the temperatures don't drop - we're on yellow alert for black ice now.
dann ist alles sehr kompliziert - bei uns sind die Straßen schnell vom Schnee geräumt -
sei vorsichtig wenn es glatt ist, kann man schnell fallen -
Alles Gute
Herzliche Grüße aus Ostdeutschland bei Dresden -
