No pun intended, however since I've been 'out and about' with a registered disabled person, it's been a real eye opener.
There are those who have been very courteous and go out of their way to help, especially the staff in John Lewis department store, and those who look at you as if you'd just crawled out from under a rock.
The friend in question has even been told by two old ladies that he shouldn't be allowed out because he is disabled. Good job I wasn't with him!
A middle aged woman deliberately pushed her pushchair at us, until I commented very loudly that I thought my companion was the one who wa blind. This not only caused him to snicker, but the woman got the message and backed off.
People often will not leave his dog alone and think it's appropriate to keep touching the dog even when asked not to because he is working.
Then there are those who feel it's okay to interrupt your conversation so that they can ask if they can touch the dog. Twice!
It just makes me very angry; the rudeness, the dirty looks, and thinking that just because he's blind, that he's an idiot too!
Next time you see a disabled person out and about, have a heart and remember that they're human too. Treat them, and everyone else for that matter, with the politeness and courtesy that they deserve.
