Cuban Jose Fernandez (Diaz) composed "Guajira Guantanamera" (Woman from Guantanamo) (Fernandez) around 1929. Cuban poet Jose Marti added verses much later with Peter, Paul and Mary introducing that version to international audiences.

In 1966 the Sandpipers "Guantanemera" (Angulo - Marti - Seeger) hit the top ten using the Pete Seeger arrangement.
