Singer, songwriter and guitarist Bob King wrote "It Must be Jesus" and sang lead with his group The Southern Tones on this 1954 release. When the group broke up Bob joined The Soul Stirrers as their first guitarist. Bob passed of kidney failure a year later.
Ray Charles and his uncredited trumpet player Renald Richard rewrote the lyrics and Ray had his first big hit with "I've Got A Woman". This combining of the Blues and Gospel, as Ray did later with "What'd I Say" became known as soul music years later. The single was recorded in late 1954 and topped the R&B chart the next year. Two years later it was a track on his self titled LP, later reissued as "Hallelujah I Love Her So".
Organist Jimmy McGriff covered "I've Got A Woman" parts one and two in 1962. The album title was identical for his debut recording. This super instrumental reached number five R&B and top twenty on the Top One Hundred. Jimmy's childhood friend was organist Jimmy Smith who he studied with, organist Richard "Groove" Holmes played at his sister's wedding and became Jimmy McGriff's teacher. He was hooked on the instrument.
