Co-founder of The Electric Flag, Barry Goldberg was the first to record "(I've Got to Use My) Imagination" (Gerry Goffin - Barry Goldberg) for the 1973 LP "It's Not The Spotlight" produced by Bob Dylan and Jerry Wexler! This is the first I've heard of Barry Goldberg and I must say his talents are striking.
Gladys Knight and The Pips (William Guest, Bubba Knight and Edward Patten) covered "I've Got To Use My Imagination" a month after the original. The track on the group's first LP for the Buddah label, "Imagination" which featured "Midnight Train To Georgia". The million selling single reached number four pop on Billboard and topped the R&B chart in early 1974.
