Composers Chips Moman and Bobby Emmons perform "Luckenbach, Texas (Back To The Basics Of Love)" at The 2010 Songwriters Roundtable at the Dothan Civic Center in Alabama. When the song was written the writers gave the tune to Waylon Jennings because his name was part of the lyric. Session keyboard player Bobby Emmons backed Elvis Presley, Dusty Springfield, Neil Diamond, Garth Brooks and Willie Nelson. Studio owner Chips (Lincoln Wayne) Moman was a Grammy winning songwriter, producer and guitarist. Interestingly neither of the composers nor Waylon Jennings had ever visited Luckenbach, Texas.
Waylon wrote ""I knew it was a hit song, even though I didn't like it, and still don't." Waylon thought the song succeeded because "every state has a Luckenbach; a place to get away from things." The lead single from the platinum album "Ol' Waylon" included the unique voice of Willie Nelson and topped the Country chart while it peaked at number twenty-five on the Top One Hundred.
