Legendary producer, songwriter, pianist and arranger Allen Toussaint wrote "Mother-in-Law". This is his version recorded at New York City's Bottom Line on February 6, 1987. Allen produced the 1957 Lee Allen hit "Walking With Mr. Lee" and Chris Kenner's "I Like It Like That" in 1961. His successful compositions include "Java", "Southern Nights" and "Working In A Coal Mine".
Ernie K. Doe (Kador) had a flamboyant on stage persona and a monster hit with "Mother-in-Law" in 1961 with Benny Spellman supplying the bass voice. The single topped both the pop and R&B charts. Allen Toussaint is playing piano. Wikipedia: "After several unsuccessful takes, Toussaint balled up the composition and threw it away as he was leaving the room. One of the backup singers, Willie Harper, thought that it was such a good song that he convinced K-Doe to give it one more try."
