Mama Africa aka Miriam Makeba and The Skylarks with "Phata, Phata". Released in 1959, the song was inspired by an African dance. Wikipedia: "The male dancers stand in a row with their arms extended out to the front, palms to the floor, while the women pat each in turn in a manner resembling security search body-frisking, after which the men do the same to the women."
Miriam Makeba became the first African to win a Grammy Award in 1967 with this version of "Pata, Pata" (Miriam Makeba - Jerry Ragovoy). The single peaked at number twelve on the Top One Hundred, number seven R&B and lead to the album of the same name. Miriam was a United Nations goodwill ambassador and civil-rights activist who met with Nelson Mandela in 1957 when he was establishing himself as a lawyer.
