Arthur Collins and Byron Harlan sing "Alexander's Ragtime Band" (Irving Berlin) from 1911, the year it was originally published. This version hit the top of the chart for ten weeks! Wikipedia: "It is believed by some (especially jazz-ragtime circles in New Orleans, and the Watzke family of New Orleans), that Berlin was writing about a real band and bandleader, who were popular at the time in New Orleans, and actually was known as Alexander's Ragtime Band, after its leader, Alexander Joseph Watzke."
With an introduction by Eddie Cantor here are Connie Boswell, Bing Crosby and Victor Young's Orchestra from 1938. Many don't realize it but it was the sales of this record that led the fight against polio well into the 40's and early 50's. Decca Records donated every cent from the sales of this record to the cause. The final tally was over $10 million. It was the sales from this record that generated a vaccine. Naturally the release reached number one on Billboard.
