In 1955 "I Put A Spell On You" (Jay Hawkins - Herb Slotkin) was recorded by bluesman Jay (Jalacy) Hawkins for Grand Records. The version was not released for decades. In 1949 Jay was the middleweight boxing champion of Alaska.

All Music Guide to the Blues: "The entire band was intoxicated during a recording session where "Hawkins screamed, grunted, and gurgled his way through the tune with utter drunken abandon." The resulting performance was no ballad but instead a "raw, guttural track" that became his greatest commercial success and reportedly surpassed a million copies in sales, although it failed to make the Billboard pop or R&B charts." Screamin' Jay Hawkins "I Put A Spell On You" was issued in 1956 on Okeh Records and was promptly banned yet it sold over a million copies! Mickey Baker is on guitar, Sam "The Man" Taylor on saxophone and the drummer is David "Panama" Francis.
