Composer Robert Schumann's wife Heine wrote the poem Die Loreley in 1823 and composer Silcher wrote the music in 1838. Original title of the poem was "Ich weiss nicht was soll es bedeuten". Inventor of the gramophone Emile Berliner himself placed this as "Loreley" on an 1889 disc.

Jo Stafford and Gordon MacRae recorded "Whispering Hope" (Alice Hawthorne) with Paul Weston's Orchestra in 1949 and peaked at number six on Billboard. Composer Alice Hawthorne was an alias for Septimus Winner who wrote this in 1868. Septimus was the seventh child in the family. Among his works was "Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone". "Whispering Hope" was not released on an album until 1962 when "Whispering Hope" was used as the title of the Jo Stafford, Gordon MacRae effort.
