Otis Williams and His Group (The Charms) (details elsewhere in this blog) inrtoduced "Gum Drops" (Rudy Toombs) in 1955.
"Gum Drop" by The Crew Cuts (Rudi Maugen, John Perkins, Pat Barrett and Ray Perkins) with David Carroll's Orchestra hit the top ten with this white cover just as the Billboard Top One Hundred was being introduced. This Toronto quartet issued a lot of cover songs introduced by black groups including "Sh-Boo", "Don't Be Angry" and "Earth Angel".
